Who it’s for:
- personal trainers, group exercise instructors, parks and recreation professionals, walking coaches, physiotherapists, activity coordinators, physicians,
chiropractors and other fitness and healthcare professionals who want to be qualified to teach others urban poling
- people in the general public who want to know all the details about the equipment and walking technique and get one-on-one feedback from a master trainer so they feel confident using their poles on their own
Description:
Designed with the expertise of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and fitness walking experts, this course teaches the Rutlin technique developed 18 years ago by Tom Rutlin, the original pioneer of Nordic walking. The technique has been extensively researched and is highly effective in strengthening the core muscles and upper body. The course agenda includes: history of Nordic walking; benefits and research; techniques from basic to high performance to rehab; troubleshooting common technique errors; designing your own Urban Poling program (marketing, pricing, etc.); and an individual evaluation. A large portion of the course is active; participants learn the Rutlin technique, then focus on how to effectively teach others.

Certification Course On-line Learning
Here's how it works: I send you an electronic version of the course manual and a link to a 60-minute training seminar. After you've studied them (and learned about the history of poling, equipment, research findings, etc.), we meet for a 90-minute active one-on-one session focused on Nordic walking technique, teaching techniques, troubleshooting strategies, marketing, promotion, etc.).
I offer this option in the Toronto, London and Windsor areas only.
Course #2:
Urban Poling Advanced Techniques for Instructors
Who it’s for:
- personal trainers, group exercise instructors, parks and recreation professionals, walking coaches, physiotherapists, activity coordinators, physicians,
chiropractors and other fitness and healthcare professionals
You've taught your participants single poling, double poling and hill climbing, and they've perfected their technique. And some of them are super-fit and need an extra challenge. Now what? At this Advanced course, you'll learn 20+ resistance training and cardiovascular exercises that incorporate your poles and are appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. Use the exercises to pump up the intensity, create an interval-style class or create a post-class stationary resistance training segment . Also covered are warm-up and cooldown exercises and stretches. You'll also learn and practice six techniques for managing groups with diverse ages and fitness levels.
