Why Nordic Walking Might Be the Most Enjoyable Exercise You’ve Never Tried
If you’ve ever thought, “I should be more active, but I just don’t love the gym,” you’re not alone. That’s why many people are drawn to Nordic walking. It’s outdoors in the fresh air, it’s social, and there’s no membership fee.
But best of all, research shows that it’s a highly effective form of exercise, and many people find it surprisingly fun.
What People Say After Their First Class
As an instructor, one of the most common things I hear after a first class is, “Thanks Barb, I really enjoyed that!”
People are often surprised by how quickly the one-hour session passes and by how energized they feel afterward Many are excited to purchase their own poles and keep going with their newfound activity.
A Common Misunderstanding About Nordic Walking
Nordic walking is often mistaken for just regular walking with poles added for stability. In reality, Nordic walking is a full-body activity that coordinates your arms, core muscles, and legs. When done properly, Nordic walking revs up all the benefits of ordinary walking and more.
Who Enjoys Nordic Walking the Most?
I find that Nordic walking is especially popular with people who aren’t keen on the classic reps-and-sets weight-room workout. My classes attract people over 50 who enjoy being active while exploring nature and mixing with like-minded others. They enjoy the simplicity of the workout while also appreciating the initial challenge of using the poles properly.
Why Take a Lesson?
Anyone can buy a pair of Nordic walking poles. But as with any new activity, it’s wise to get professional instruction to ensure you gain all the benefits while minimizing any risks. I focus on helping people feel comfortable, confident, and successful with their poles.
In my Nordic walking classes and Quick-Start Clinics, my goal is for everyone to finish feeling successful and excited to learn more.
Seeing Confidence Grow
One of my favourite parts of teaching is watching someone arrive feeling a bit nervous but leave standing taller and happier. That shift in confidence almost always happens after just one session, and it is always rewarding to witness.
Why People Keep Coming Back
People tell me they feel energized after a class. They say the rhythmic movement feels good in their bodies despite any minor aches and pains they may have arrived with.
More Than Just Walking
Nordic walking may look simple, and it is. However, it does take some practice to coordinate your arms and legs so that your poles propel you smoothly forward. It’s something you have to try yourself to really appreciate.
Easy to Fit Into Real Life
You don’t need special clothes, a pricey membership, or even a lot of time. Nordic walking fits easily into everyday life. Even a quick daily Nordic walk around the block can significantly improve your health.
