The Best Nordic Walking Poles: What to Look for Before You Buy
Choosing the right poles can make a significant difference in how much you enjoy Nordic walking. Here are the key features to consider before you buy.
Handles
There are two styles of Nordic walking pole handles: strap-based and strapless. I prefer Urban Poling’s patented strapless handles and recommend them to all my clients and class participants. They allow you to practise proper technique without the extra concern of managing straps. The grab-and-go aspect is also extremely convenient.
Boot Tips
The quality of the boot tips is more important than many people realize. Look for durable rubber tips rather than the small, hard plastic tips I often see on other brands of poles. Compared to plastic tips, substantial rubber tips provide better traction on pavement, absorb shock more effectively, and create a quieter, smoother walking experience. Cheaper plastic tips tend to wear out more quickly and don’t offer the same soft, bouncy landing.
Adjustable Poles
Unless you’re a super-serious or professional Nordic walker, adjustable poles are always the best choice. They allow you to finetune their length and make it easy to share them with others who are a different height than you They also telescope to a shorter length, making them easy to fit into a backpack or store when not in use.
Brand and Quality
Invest in a reputable brand that offers a solid warranty and guarantee. Avoid cheap options sold online or elsewhere. As with most things, you get what you pay for. Expect to spend at least $100 for a quality pair. A well-designed, well-made pair of poles will last for years and will likely be the only pair you need.
Still Not Sure Which Poles to Purchase?
Try before you buy. I loan Urban Poling Spirit poles to participants in my Quick-Start Clinics, private lessons, and weekly classes. This gives them the opportunity to experience the Urban Poling quality firsthand. They can then purchase then own pair from me or another retailer when they’re ready.
