Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto; Yonge Street gates
WHERE WE MEET
We meet just inside the Yonge Street gates of Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The gates are located on the east side of Yonge St., just south of Merton St. and north of Glen Elm Ave (see map at left).
Important: If you’re using a GPS, use this address: 1651-1671 Yonge Street, Toronto, ON. The address on the cemetery’s website will take you to the Mount Pleasant entrance, not the Yonge St. entrance!
Driving: Drive through the gates (see pink arrow at left), take an immediate left and immediately park to the side of the road, keeping your wheels off the grass. (We have permission to park inside…lots of exercisers do, but the gardeners are very particular about the grass!) There is also free parking on Yonge St., but check to see if there is a time limit.
There is a park bench just inside the gates if you arrive early.
Subway: Exit at Davisville station; walk south on the east side of Yonge St. Once you see the cemetery on your left, continue walking. Enter through the big gates. About a 10-15 minute walk. (You can also exit at St. Clair station and walk north.)
WHAT TO WEAR & BRING
Wear what you’d wear for a brisk walk (e.g., Summer/Spring/Fall: T-shirt, shorts/tights/pants, windbreaker, etc; Winter: tights/pants, down vest/jacket, hat/headband, warm mitts/gloves, etc. See my Blog page for photos and ideas.
Running shoes are fine; light trail shoes provide even more support and decrease fatigue. The walking surface is smooth asphalt — no potholes, mud or tree roots!
Leave purses at home (or in your car/my car if you travel by subway). If you need to carry something, backpacks aren’t ideal for Nordic walking but waistpacks work very well.
I will have lots of poles to loan (and I usually have poles for sale). Or bring your own Nordic walking poles. (Are you sure they’re Nordic walking poles and not hiking poles?).
